Moldova has restored a section of the railroad from the border with Ukraine to the border with Romania to ensure the import of crushed stone from Ukraine for the reconstruction of the R-34 highway, Avtomagistral-Pivden, the company carrying out the work, reported.
The route Basarabianska – Yargara – Prut 2 – Kahul had not been in use for more than five years.
The 42-kilometer R-34 reconstruction project is being implemented this year by the Ukrainian company Avtomagistral-Pivden in partnership with the National Road Administration of Moldova. The contract was signed in 2025.
In preparation for the project, Avtomagistral-Pivden is setting up a new production base near Cahul, close to the Romanian border. The facility will include a concrete plant and a soil-mixing plant.
Previously, the company mainly used inert materials from Romania in its Moldovan projects. For the first time, crushed stone from Ukraine’s Khmelnytsky region will be supplied for the R-34 reconstruction.

Moldovan railways have rebuilt the loading ramps and provided two locomotives. A test run of a 3,000-ton freight train was successfully completed, consisting of 32 wagons, 12 of which belong to Avtomagistral-Pivden.
In total, around 300,000 tons of crushed stone from Ukraine are planned to be supplied to Moldova.

The 42-kilometer section of the R-34 highway runs between the cities of Cahul and Cantemir along the border with Romania.
The project includes widening the road, reconstructing the pavement, arranging intersections and access points, building six bridges, and installing sidewalks, lighting, protective fencing, and drainage systems.
Excavation work will exceed 500,000 cubic meters, and the cold recycling area will cover over 375,000 square meters. More than 100,000 tons of asphalt concrete will be used for paving.

The R-34 road, which leads to the port of Giurgiulesti, has a complicated reconstruction history. An 83-kilometer section was initially contracted to the Italian company Serenissima Costruzioni S.P.A., but financial difficulties halted the work. The project was then transferred to the Turkish contractor OZKA, which also failed to complete it and hired a local subcontractor.
