  1. They should have thrown in a crocoduck to complete their self parody.

Maybe even that vaguely feathered crocodile thing counts…

The thing that immediately occurred to me is that you’d never see these creatures in Star Wars because they don’t have the Star Wars creature “style”.

  3. I’m honestly surprised it took this guy “two weeks” these are prompts my 6 year old could have put together in 3 minutes… there’s nothing “star wars” about it. it’s just “show me a spider with a chimp face” “show me a snail with a peacock head” I’m in the camp that there’s room for AI at the table for “different” types of media, but I’m just not sure what this is accomplishing other than a passive aggressive showcase of how one idiot with a tablet and a $6 Gemini subscription can allow a company to fire it’s entire creative storytelling branch.

Honestly after years of low effort reboots and sequels from them AI slop seems like a natural next step. “Here y’all go since you’ll consume anything, apparently”

  5. Anyone else notice how flat MMs ears are in the article picture?

Looks like they have not quite got he idea of 3D right for generated images let alone the rest of it…

  6. If a potential concept designer showed up at Lucalfilm for an interview with a peacock snail in their packet, they would be escorted off the property.

  7. Wow didn’t expect Disney to use Italian brain rot in Star Wars

really glad that on 5 December my subscription ended and I will never subscribe again

Next Pixar movies gonna be made entirely with Sora.

  8. A fucking blue lion and a polar bear with stripes, really? A view a probe might see on an alien world? It’s literally earth animals barely changed, utter garbage. I’d be seriously embarrassed showing this off at a ted talk, not to mention with the LucasFilms logo attached to it. Jesus.

It’s been a long journey from Phil Tippett, making fantastic creatures from shit and sticks, to fantastic algorithms making shit on a stick.

  10. I can’t tell if this article is a news posting or an editorial. It’s tagged as Feature but it sure seems like an opinion piece to me.

  11. It reminds of the creepy Google ads of tall pandas walking down the runway or elephants with watermelon slices for ears.

It’s funny they think those images are a selling point rather than a turnoff.

  12. That trash article instersperses AI fearmongering with some good points. Ohhh noooo you can trick ai into saying stuff if you try reall harrrrrrdd ooooooooohhhhnooooooo!!! What a buch of BS.

They honestly want you to believe that the fact anyone can do it quickly is amazing and excuses the mistakes. These people care more about discrediting and bastardizing the artistic process than the output AI can make.

  14. Technology aside, it’s the monopolies that’s killing everything. Yes this is shitty but what options do you have? All media is owned by 4 mega corporations and you can bet the others are doing the same. Similar with food – almost all food brands are owned by 5 companies and even grocery stores are virtual monopolies. It’s like illusion of choice. Damn we need a new version of the Roosevelts to break up this shit.

  15. They lack creativity and imagination because they’re trained off animals that exist in the wild.

What I mean by that: that’s why we need humans to continue to be artists and creators.

What execs think I mean by that: we need to train AI models on more fantasy creatures.

I started boycotting because of the homophobic donations and the fact that they’re on Palestinian BDS list. I’m kinda glad I broke away from them because of those things, because if I was paying for Disney and they turned around and gave me this cheap garbage, I’d be livid.

  17. Disney putting out AI slop of Star Wars is kinda emblematic of what they’ve done to it since buying it from Lucas. Ignoring the EU while creating “new” movies that are pretty much cobbled together from cut off parts of the EU.

While i do love Star Wars I consider the canon closed post Lucas.

  18. the article itself was written by AI: “In the months since, however, it’s clear that Star Wars: Field Guide wasn’t a cautionary tale. It was a mission statement.”

  19. I *wish* I could have been in that room to boo the hell out of that presentation. It was just a sizzle reel of obviously AI generated animals with a Star Wars binocular HUD edited over the top. I wonder how George Lucas feels about his baby… was the money worth it?

As an aside: the fact that it took two weeks surprises me, it looks like a competent editor could have done it in an afternoon.

  20. This isn’t really Artificial Intelligence, it’s Automated Intelligence Approximation and it’s shite.

  21. I’d any other company or product failed so badly after so so many attempts using so so so many resources it would cease to be.

It’s so so so so infuriating there any enough sos!
