So I’ve been watching movies and series on the ARD and ZDF online services for about a year or so, but today, when trying to watch AsbestosI was prompted to verify my age.
Is this a new requirement or have I just not attempted to watch 16+ rated content before? I’m assuming there’s no work-around to this other than to wait until 10 pm!
I live in a neighbouring country and use the online offerings to improve my German.

It’s been a thing for a while.
Always has been there. ARD is legally obliged to do it this way, because the laws that govern it weren’t updated for streaming. It legally counts as watching TV
Follow the QR code/Link, it’ll show you how to verify your age.
Well there is mediathekviewweb.de , an open source alternative frontend that combines all the various public broadcasting services into one convenient place with a much better search interface to boot
Nothing new
Verify or use mediathekview

Or you always happened to do that after 22:00.

The verification isn’t particularly secure, as far as I remember. It asks you to type out the birthday from the machine readable part of your ID/Passport, which includes a check digit. It doesn’t actively connect to any database, it’s probably all client-side.
I think that if you know how to calculate the check digit, you can fake birthdays to pass the age verification.
Just register with a German name, that’s fine.
Btw any valid MRZ passes the check (not necessarily one from a real document). The system (also used e.g. by PSN and Blizzard) is plain stupid.
Because at 10 pm EVERY kid under 16 is sleeping 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
