Slovakia is pinning its hopes on nuclear power, which has traditionally been at the heart of its energy production, to meet an expected rise in electricity consumption in the coming years.

In recent years there have been a number of significant milestones in Slovakia’s nuclear power sector.

In 2023, a third unit at the Mochovce power plant was commissioned. Its operator, the dominant energy producer Slovenské Elektrárne (SE), plans to complete a fourth unit in the near future.

There are also plans to build small modular reactors, as well as another large nuclear power plant, to meet projected growth in demand for electricity.

“Slovakia, as a nuclear energy power, continues to advance in science and research in this sector,” said Economy Minister Denisa Saková in June 2025, when the Italian company Newcleo and the state nuclear decommissioning company JAVYS signed an agreement to establish a joint venture for the development of small modular reactors (SMRs).

Meanwhile, construction of a large nuclear power station is a flagship initiative of Prime Minister Robert Fico. Under current plans, the plant would be built by US company Westinghouse.
