I’m entirely sure that we bought those as a way of paying US “security fee” and not necessarily because we need it, just like Saudi Arabia buying billions of dollars worth of weapons from US without having need for them. We bribed US because we or people ruling us all know it well that half of our fellow Europeans would support US _in case of a real escalation_. Half of Europeans sent condolences to Russia and condemned Turkey after Turkey shot down a Russian jet wandering around on Turkish soil, in other terms, half of Europe would support whoever is more powerful and not necessarily Denmark. This is bitter truth that almost every pan-eu folk turn blind eye. This is Trump way of doing things, ask allied countries to buy weapons from US as a way of “Donation”. We deserve to be squeezed like a cow as long as we don’t produce American or at least China-grade weaopnery, which we insist not to produce. Probably this planes would only cost something like 200 million € to produce, we paid 1.6 billion € to develop American defense industry and to feed those corrupt senators.
