The Russian Interests Section at the Embassy of Switzerland in Georgia urged its citizens to consider “all circumstances and possible risks” before traveling to Georgia amid a rise in reported entry denials.

“We note that recently there has been an increase in cases of refusal of entry to Georgia for citizens of the Russian Federation whose passports list, as their place of birth, in particular the Ukrainian SSR, the Abkhazian ASSR, South Ossetia, Crimea, the Donetsk People’s Republic, the Luhansk People’s Republic, as well as the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions,” the Russian Interests Section said in a Facebook post on December 30.

“In the current situation, where the actions of the Georgian border authorities introduce an element of uncertainty into Russians’ plans for travel and leisure in Georgia, we strongly recommend that citizens planning a trip to this country carefully weigh all circumstances and possible risks,” it added.

In recent weeks, reports have increased of Russian citizens being denied entry to Georgia based on the place of birth listed in their passports. The overall number of such cases remains unclear.
