In his new year’s message, his first as Nationalist Party leader, Alex Borg said that Malta was at a crossroads which presented major challenges but also an opportunity: an opportunity which he sought to suggest his party could seize.

Borg’s message, which was broadcast on Wednesday evening, built on his Christmas message a week earlier as the PN leader argued that the country’s future should rest on three pillars: “respect, courage and above all hope.”

It is at this point that he described Malta’s present as being at a crossroads: “we are living through a time of opportunity, but also a time of major challenges.”

“Many people are feeling this reality every day – whether through the rising cost of living, the challenge of affordable housing, or wages that are no longer sufficient to keep up with the realities of life,” Borg maintained.

In this context, the PN leader pledged that his party would put forward various proposals over the coming years to address the difficulties the public truly face, all while pushing for “further reforms that lead to better wages through higher productivity that reflects the dignity of workers,” without elaborating.

He insisted that the young – a demographic the 31-year-old stressed he formed part of – needed to be listened to at a time when they felt their needs were not being met by politics.

He said that the young brought “courage, not inexperience” to the table: “so that we think differently, open new doors, and build bridges in a changing society.”

Borg said that 2026 should not be viewed just as a new year but as the start of a “conversation.”

“An open discussion on the country that we will leave for our children, and for their children. On the changes that we will make so that we preserve all that is good in this country whilst fixing what needs to be fixed.”

“I am with you. This is our moment,” he said as he brought the message to a close by wishing for a new year that brought the Maltese closer to a fairer, stronger and more compassionate Malta.
