Chinese Port Expansion in Africa

  1. China has learned the European colonial strategy. China lends money to poor nations that they cannot repay. When they fail to pay, China leases their ports for commercial and naval purposes.

    I’ve seen many maps just like this about China. What i really want to see is one that shows western interests in Africa. Once I heard that corporations domiciled in London own more than a trillion dollars worth of african natural resources. I also read that France, via its former colonialism, continues to hold a large amount of wealth and power in all of its former colonies. I wish someone would make maps about that.

  3. China is expanding influence quietly and slowly unlike the overly media-bloated influence plays of U.S. and Russia.

    That’s why their strategy feels like “do nothing – win”.

  4. Should be noted that Djibouti also hosts:

    * The French
    * The Americans
    * The Italians
    * The Japanese
    * The Chinese

    Something like 5% of Djibouti GDP is basically rent payments from Foreign Military bases, this is what happens when you are a essentially a port with a country bolted on to it.

  5. So nowhere that matters to China when actual hostilities or even mere cold war type embargoes start.

    Or more accurately, nowhere that can make up for the two critical maritime chokepoints (Malacca and most prominently Hormuz) they’d need to control to remain functional back home, let alone supply these bases.

    As it is these potential bases would just be ripe for the picking like the German colonies were.

  6. China is not really famous for the good quality of foreign investment. Novi Sad railway station is propably the best example. Corrupted countries + foreign investments are generally a dangerous combination.

  7. China invests in Africa with technology and capital, buying mineral resources without interfering in African politics. Europeans, on the other hand, came to Africa with guns and armies, taking countless black slaves and selling them like merchandise. That is the difference.

    Few people know how complex the ethnic conflicts in Africa are. The child-like scribbled borders were bombs planted by European colonizers led by the British after they withdrew, exacerbating conflicts between African countries and intensifying ethnic issues.

    The gamble for Africa once again. But we Europeans are the bad one while the Chinese doing the same.
