Update of my previous 2023 map.

This was originally made because examples i found online were horrendously cluttered, difficult to read, & usually out of date. It took a bit of messing around to find a color combination that would be visually easy to distinguish every country within a single category. Furthermore, I made a colorblind version. Any feedback would be appreciated, especially with the de facto status of lesser known areas.

De facto participants are included as this map is meant more to show the current situation in practice than the actual legal jurisdictions. For example many of the microstates are officially in neither, yet participate in both. For a while i couldn't decide whether to include states participating in Schengen & Eurozone (Monaco, San Marino, Vatican) as also effectively participating in the EU, but eventually i settled on a micro-portion of the legend to represent the micro-states

Updates from previous map mostly based on feedback:

* Rearrange some elements for better reading.

* Added my attempt at a colorblind version.

* Various islands previously missing now there (Balearic, Faroe, Shetland, Gotland, Greek ones)

* Bulgaria joining Schengen & Eurozone.

* Romania joining Schengen.

* Added Gibraltar. Some mentioned before that it should be purple (in Schengen), however from what i can tell there is simply expedited checks for works commuting between Spain & Gibraltar, which doesn't include many other factors of Schengen like a unified visa policy & movement of goods. There is the intention however for Gibraltar to eventually join Schengen officially.

* Added Spanish cities in Morocco Ceuta & Melilla

* Andorra recolored to being in Schengen, as even though they aren't officially it seems in practice they don't have real border enforcement.

    Good old Ireland. We won’t be goaded into a NAFO alliance either. Europe has never given a shit about the occupation of our 6 counties by imperial britain. Never so much as lifted a finger to help.

    Brigading by salty Brits 🧂 🤪

    Montenegro and Kosovo are not in the eurozone. They use the euro as currency unilaterally and are not in anyway parties to the fiscal union.

  4. This is the very first time I’ve seen a map with a color-blind version, and… it was applied to a map that didn’t need one at all. It already uses a color-blind-friendly palette. A color-blind version is usually necessary only when the map relies on red-green or blue-violet combinations with similar luminance. Also, instead of using patterns, a much better approach is simply to use colors that are color-blind-friendly. I think people who make charts and maps should really learn this, since 12% of males are color-blind – a huge part of the population.

    The EU is inevitable

    Standard of living and economies rising are non negociable

  6. How can you make a map like this without including EEA membership? The EEA is a much more impactful thing than Schengen, at least in Norway.
