Yesterday, the President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, used her New Year’s address to call on Icelanders to meet the year ahead with solidarity, courage, and warmth. In her speech, she touched on technology, collective memory, and the importance of social support.

Delivering her second New Year’s address since taking office, the President thanked the public for their support over the past year. RÚV reports that she reflected on the mixture of challenges and meaningful moments experienced by many households.

A central theme of the address was artificial intelligence. Halla noted that few technological developments have provoked as much hope and concern as AI, describing it as a powerful but inherently mechanical tool that lacks moral awareness.

She stressed the importance of critical thinking and clear ethical frameworks, arguing that technology should serve humanity rather than shape it unchecked.

The President also reflected on the lasting impact of national trauma. Marking 30 years since the deadly avalanches in the Westfjords, she said the events continue to cast a long shadow, while also standing as a reminder of courage, selflessness, and community spirit.

Turning to more recent events, Halla spoke about the ongoing situation in Grindavík, noting that while physical defences have helped protect homes, emotional and social support are equally vital. She praised the nationwide response, with individuals opening both their homes and hearts to those affected.

The address concluded with a call to protect children and young people, support those who stumble, and actively encourage kindness.

“Our history shows that when times are toughest, we stand together,” the President said, expressing hope that the coming year will be defined by solidarity, courage, and warmth.
