  1. i wonder if the French speaking population goes down everywhere in places where it is not the main language. (Canada and Europe)

French is the 5th most spoken language in the world as a result of the French Empire, and is spread across pretty much every continent

  3. There are literal pieces of France missing from this map, French Guyana and New Caledonia for example.

Yeah that number for Germany is completely incorrect lmao. No way even 10% of the population can speak the slightest bit of French

  5. There’s no way a third (or even up to 50% according to the graphic) of Germans can speak French.

I live and grew up very close to the border to France and which is also a part which has been occupied by the French after WW2 and even though almost everybody “learns” french in school even here I’m pretty sure not a third can actually speak french. This is surely not better in any less french influenced region of Germany.

Edit: Misread the graphics. 10-29% is stated which is realistic. Still it is likely closer to the lower end of that range.

Forgot Guyana, Martinique, Guadeloupe, new caledonia that should be dark blue. French polynesia seems too small for the map as well as st pierre.

Also, not sure if it’s just me, but I’ve met more than a few russians that had a very impressive french.

Super interesting map though! Love it

  7. I call BS on the UK data. Too many people mistaking “was forced to take French GCSE” for “can speak”.

  8. I dont believe in the data from portugal, we do learn the basic at school but most people forget it. Unless you count saying bonjour as knowing french

  9. Canada is only one province where French is spoken. The whole rest of the country speaks English. Kind of a deceiving map.

  10. At some point there were half a million French citizens in Greater London. Add to this all the other immigrants who speak French natively or as a second language, plus the Brits that actually speak French … you clearly get more than 10% of the UK population
