The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has fined Armenian athlete Mikayel Mikayelyan for attempting to conceal the name of Azerbaijan on his competition outfit.
FIS imposed sanctions after the skier covered the word “Azerbaijan” on his racing suit with tape during an official event, The Caspian Post reports via Armenian media.
The incident reportedly occurred during one of the Tour de Ski races held in the Italian town of Dobbiaco. It was noted that large advertising boards featuring the name Azerbaijan were prominently displayed not only on athletes’ uniforms but throughout the competition venue.
The athlete has not provided any explanation for his actions.
In May last year, FIS signed a five-year agreement with Azerbaijan’s State Tourism Agency. According to the deal, Azerbaijan will serve as the main partner at FIS World Championships and World Cup events from the 2025/2026 season through the end of the 2029/2030 season.
