Preliminary data from Environment and Climate Change Canada shows Moose Jaw experienced a wetter and colder-than-average December.
According to meteorologist Danielle Desjardins, the average temperature in Moose Jaw through Dec. 28 was –12.4 C, about 2.3 degrees colder than the December normal of –10.1 C.
Precipitation for December measured 13.9 millimetres as of Dec. 28, exceeding the normal of 11.9 millimetres. That places the city at 117 per cent of typical December precipitation, with any additional snowfall or rain yet to be tabulated expected to push totals higher.
While a late-month storm brought strong winds to parts of southern Saskatchewan, no wind records were confirmed for Moose Jaw. However, some areas in the Cypress Hills region recorded gusts as high as 128 kilometres per hour.
Desjardins noted that the final, complete summary for Moose Jaw’s December weather will be made available shortly.
