The world’s largest island, Greenland, holds a strategic position in the Arctic, a region growing in importance due to melting ice from the climate crisis and the opening of new trade routes.
Looks like the russkies got to the north of Sweden and Finland!

Importance of Greenland to the US:
Resources…
…which belong to other nations.

If I read this map correctly, importance of Greenland is not much. Frozen wasteland which does not give much exclusive rights.

It’s important to note that all of the minerals found in Greenland can already be mined much more cost effectively elsewhere in the world. It is extremely difficult and expensive to conduct any kind of mining operations in the Arctic.
Besides that, US companies have had the opportunity to bid on mining concessions in Greenland for many years now, but very few have done so because it’s simply not good business.
Everything that Donald Trump says the US “needs” from Greenland, they already have access to by peaceful means. This imperialist warmongering attitude is completely unnecessary.

BTW, [sector principle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sector_principle) is outdated since 1994 convention which established 200 mile EEZ, not to mention that it never actually mattered really. So this map is wrong.

Denmark could easily threaten to not allow the Americans to keep their military base in Greenland if they keep threatening Greenland’s sovereignty. And it just might come to that before Trump would listen. Trump when on and on about Canada becoming the 51th state until Trudeau suggested that parts of the states could become part of Canada.
All these posts are trying to justify an American occupation and Invasion of Greenland.
And I say invasion and occupation because USA is threatening us to hand over Greenland. They could do deals with us or cooperation but that’s not what they’re doing.
And before you say Denmark is occupying Greenland, Greenland has all the autonomy it can have but they have chosen not to get full independence because their population is just 65,000 people. Not even 100,000 people.
Greenlanders are an indigious people and we need to protect and preserve their language and culture.
Kalaallisut is the main language of Greenland and the one they teach primarily in school.

Trump wants to sever ties with NATO, of which Denmark and Greenland are members.
Trump wants to annex Greenland.
He could just do nothing, continue with the status quo, and enjoy military access to Greenland through NATO.

Maps of the actual continental shelf claims and submissions:
Note that only Russia, Canada, and Denmark are requesting extended continental shelf up to the North Pole, and that these are being adjudicated by UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.
Trump is unlikely to affect this, unless by weakening Denmark and Canada in favor of Russia.

Fuck Americans trying to create a narrative about the importance of Greenland and therefore justify the next invasion of their orange dictator.
The whole world needs to start boycotting and resisting American influence. At this point I’d even prefer for the EU to ally with China out of pure pragmatism, because apart from Russia no other country is as threatening and disgusting as the US.

It’s not just resources. There’s something called the GIUK (Greenland, Iceland, UK) gap, which is essentially two waterways that lead directly to the North Atlantic. From a security standpoint, this gap is important to the US since controlling it makes the North Atlantic an American lake, protects the US east coast, and keeps trade routes safe and open.
Trump probably just cares about the minerals and resources, though.
