Hazardous conditions and warnings
The Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued an orange danger code for eight provinces: Zeeland, South Holland, North Holland, Utrecht, Flevoland, Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe. A yellow code is in effect in Overijssel, Gelderland, North Brabant, and Limburg.
According to forecasters, in the western part of the country some areas may see from 3 to 5 centimeters of snow, which is a very unusual phenomenon for the country.
Meteorologists note that winter weather conditions and slippery roads will persist for several more days. The Rijkswaterstaat road service also warns of a challenging situation. Drivers are urged to accommodate snow-clearing equipment and not to overtake it.
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) and the Rijkswaterstaat road management service warn road users about ice on the roads due to snow and the freezing of wet surfaces. The first accidents already occurred in the night leading into Monday. Specifically, on the A2 highway, five trucks and a scheduled bus stopped on Sunday evening due to icing. Throughout the night, road movement was restored.
Around 00:40 local time, a truck driver lost control due to the icy road near Ermelo. The truck was skidded and collided with a passenger car. In Zeeland province, a car went into the water, presumably also due to icing.
People are urged not to travel on roads unless absolutely necessary and to stay at home. The bad weather has also affected rail links: Nederlandse Spoorwegen reports disruptions on eight routes, and trains at Amsterdam Central Station have been suspended due to snow.
It was also noted that in 2021, dozens of flights were canceled and trains were halted in the Netherlands due to similar weather conditions.
Restrictions on movement are expected to continue soon, and coordination of services across the country will continue until the weather stabilizes.
