Nestlé Malta is advising customers not to consume two batches of infant formula products as a precautionary measure, following a global recall over concerns they may contain a toxin which can cause food poisoning.

In a statement, the company said consumers should not consume the products even though, it stressed,  there have been no confirmed reports of any illness associated with consumption of the products concerned.

The products are: SMA First Infant Milk 1 From Birth (Batch 51350346AA with the expiration date 5/31/2027) and SMA Advanced First Infant Milk 1 From Birth (Batch 51450742F1 expires on 5/25/2027).

“This decision was made in collaboration with the competent authorities due to a potential microbiological deviation detected in an ingredient used in the composition of the products,” Nestlé Malta said.

On Monday, Swiss food giant Nestlé announced a global recall of batches of infant formula in several European countries, as a precautionary measure. On its website, the group said it had detected a “quality issue” in an ingredient sourced from one of its major suppliers.

Nestlé recalled specific batches of its SMA infant formula, which is sold under different names in different countries, due to the potential presence of cereulide. Once consumed, the toxin can lead to a rapid onset of symptoms including nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. So far, there are no known cases of illness related to the consumption of the food.

When contacted and asked if Malta was impacted by the recall, a spokesperson for Nestlé Malta said they are currently working closely with the relevant authorities in Malta.

“We would like to emphasise that this is a voluntary, precautionary recall. At this stage, we have no confirmed reports of any illnesses linked to the products concerned. Out of an abundance of caution, we are advising parents and caregivers to stop using the product if it belongs to one of the affected batches.”

Parents can verify whether their product is included in the recall by checking the batch numbers listed on the website Nestlé Press Release
