What types of metric does this index compare to determine the number?Â

it’s just estimated data, and thus wildly inaccurate
besides I’d much rather life in vietnam than Mexico, isn’t a safe society for even the poorest not an super important factor for human development?

What’s the point, this list isn’t even an accurate list in terms of HDI.
The current rankings are:
1) Iceland
2) Norway
3) Switzerland
4) Denmark
5) Germany
6) Sweden
7) Australia
8) Netherlands
9) Hong Kong
10) Belgium
11) Ireland
For example, in this post, the UK is 5th, in the actual rankings they are 13th. Lumping the “biggest economies” together to view HDI is a bit like grouping chefs to view their hair colours, surely the grouping would be better when looking at their economies rather than HDI.

Good ol’ south africa, highest inequality in the world

Life expectancy is dragging Russia down HDI If it were 78 years instead of 73, the HDI would be around 0.880-0.890.
