This is pretty normal in Russia. Their society doesn’t really place value on life the way we’re used to, and top that off with violence and alcoholism being rampant, domestic violence being basically normalized and accepted, it only encourages this. We don’t know what the family situation is like, but for all we know the dad was a deadbeat drunk who beat his wife and kids and went to Ukraine for the $$. Of course they could also just be heartless kids and dad actually cared / loved for them.
Theres reports of women over there basically cycling marriages through soldiers in order to collect the death benefits when they die. I swear I saw something about there being a legit business with connecting women with the soldiers, and the business gets a fee / cut. I guess from the solidiers perspective it can make sense, most of them are poor as shit alcoholics / druggies from shithole villages in bum fuck nowhere, so if some absolute babe wanted to play wifey for 2 weeks for their death money before they get yeeted by a drone, why not.

I have family in Eastern Europe and is not that uncommon for dads to be like that. Here in the west dads are some loving caring creatures that understand that besides money and beatings, maybe you should love and care for your offspring too.
