Thank you for following our rolling coverage of the enduring Arctic cold snap that has been chilling the UK.
Last night was the coldest night of the winter so far. The lowest recorded temperature was -12.5C, measured at a Norfolk village.
The icy conditions have produced beautiful images of snowy landscapes across the country – but there are also hazards.
Dramatic scenes played out in Essex, where a dog broke through a frozen lake, prompting a rescue attempt that saw two passers-by end up in the water.
The cold weather is bound to stay with us this week and will be aggravated by a “multi-hazard event” from Thursday.
That is when Storm Goretti, the first named storm of the year, is expected to hit the south of the country, which, in combination with ongoing snow warnings, looks likely to create snow storm-like conditions in some parts.
