  1. Lol, so many institutions have and continue to solidly jump onto the No Gaijin train either with 0 understanding of how the domestic economy needs to function in order to not nosedive or with that knowledge and then some other overriding factor (everyone else is doing it? Legit xenophobic/racist/nationalistic tendencies? An interest in sinking the institution theyve worked for forever but which has never made their life better?).

This trajectory can’t end well for the country or anyone invested in Japan Inc.

  2. I don’t have a problem with differentiating between fees for domestic and international students (especially with the weakened Yen having resulted in a de facto decrease for international students from countries with stronger currencies) and the amount of the increases (73,000 Yen, only applying to students who enroll from 2027 onwards) isn’t particularly harsh.

That said, the housing fee increase seems like it is being quite unfairly implemented – some students will see their monthly rent more than double overnight which is going to be extremely difficult on them. This sort of thing should be gradually implemented, not radically increased on short notice.

Any reason given afterward is often doubtful, in my opinion.

The real reason, which is not politically correct, is that they simply decided to do the same as many other countries that have recently adopted a dual-fee system, applying different rates to citizens and foreigners.

Ah yes. Because of our shitty yen and policies that got us in this situation let’s punish the people we actually need and want. New talent.

  5. I feel like a lot of comments for a few of these sort of policies always say “Well X country is also more expensive for Y” Yes… that’s true, it’s usually fine to do that because Universities receive money from tax payers so locals should get priority. However, Japan is in dire need to talent hunt globally. It does Japan more good to get top fresh talent and hold on to them than it is to allow them to go. Japanese universities have seen a decline in global rankings recently and this furthers that. It doesn’t do them much good to say “Well Canada or England is more expensive” … well yes England is consistently in the top 20 global universities.
