What’s it like at the intersection of Sweden, Finland and Norway?

  1. It’s a bit out of the way. Have to hike for a few hours from the nearest town or take a boat and then hike for only half an hour. There’s a concrete pedestal you can then take a photo with.

Kilpisjärvi – three country cairn. A monument is erected here which can be reached only through finland if i am not mistaken.

  3. I had a lil family vacay there some like 5+ years ago and one main thing I remember is the little store before the border on Finland’s side had a lot of Norwegian customers. I imagine it’s lower prices for some products at least. But beautiful area! The lake had a massive fog roll in and it was ethereal.

  4. My cousin lives there. They have had some cold (-29°C) and colder (-39°C) days lately.

Not many trees there, and if there are, they are quite short. Some mountains and hills.

If you’re interested in the local village Kilpisjärvi I lived there for a year.

If you’re into outdoor activities it’s hard to beat. Access to nature is probably best in finland especially if you’re into hiking. The open vast fells span out to the horizon, you can also easily travel to sweden and norway for forests, mountain ranges and fjords.

The village only has about 100 inhabitants. You get to know them relatively quickly. During peak seasons there are significantly more tourists than locals and the local economy depends on tourism.

Only one small shopping centre so goods are going to be more expensive than other places in finland.

Shipping can be problematic. For example if the pakettiautomaatti is full. Matkahuolto will deliver to the nearest pick up point. Which is 1.5h by car in karensuvanto.

Not as dark as people think. Only over-cast days are dark in the winter. Otherwise starlight and aurora really brighten things up and full moon can illuminate everything to where you can clearly see all the fells and mountains in the distance in the middle of the night.

You can drink basically any stream/lake water. The ground water that is tapped is also best I’ve ever had. Crisp, light, cold super refreshing.

  7. I’m half Finn/Norwegian and it’s on my bucket list to stand there, one foot on Finnish ground the other one on Norwegian and piss on Sweden.

I had watched some videos on yt people riding bikes and just going on a grocery run in Sweden whilst living in Finland in that narrow stretch.

  9. Lots of reindeer. My family drove from Finland to Norway on that route a few years ago

The intersection between Finland, Russia and Norway is actually a tiny bit further south then the intersection between Sweden, Finland and Norway it’s a fun fact.
