  1. Just prorogue parliament for awhile or some other sneaky method. Perhaps a distraction tactic?

  2. The previous Ethics commissioner has chimed in on this appointment, it’s going to be pretty hard for her to follow the rules but the commissioner will have no way to check.

“I hope Ms. Freeland will take the time to read and reflect about sections 33 and following of the Conflict of Interest Act. It will not be easy to abide by these provisions. Nobody will be able to check anyway.”

  3. Watching this play out, while completely disinterested in any of it has been illuminating.

At every step, it’s been articles written and comments made complaining endlessly.

She’s going to leave. Stop clutching your pearls throughout the process, at every single step of it. She has employees. Who will lose their jobs. It’s not a vacuum. Chill the F out.

If there is another floor crosser we could be in a situation where the balance of power is held by a foreign agent of Ukraine. That is insane

    This is soooo stupid.

Why are people asking that she just walk out… just like any company parting ways amicably with an employee, have them make sure there’s a transition plan in place.

So why is this such a big deal when we allow MPs to have dual citizenship???? We are not equal in our view of what is a conflict of interest

  7. My point is simple: I believe this is exactly in Canada’s interests.
Yes, we will support Ukraine. Yes, we will send more money there- our taxpayers money. And yes, Ukraine has serious corruption issues. That is precisely why we need someone who can control or at least monitor how our money is spent and make sure it goes where it is supposed to go.
Obviously, Zelensky is now looking for help from outside the local political circle someone who can provide oversight and reduce misuse of funds. From my perspective, that is not a problem. That is a safeguard.

  8. I wonder how much of this noise is simply because it’s Freeland, and she is hated by some.

  9. She needs to step down. Being paid by Canadian tax payers to do work for someone else, no bueno

She accepted the job on Dec 22 during a trip to the Ukraine, where she was presumably negotiating Canada’s latest aid package to them. She says she told Carney she accepted the role on the 24th, which is the point where a normal person would have also resigned their current role. But these are Liberals, and that would be inconvenient at a time when Carney is trying to backroom deal his way into a majority that voters did not see fit to give him, so nope, no resignation. Carney then announced $2.5 billion in additional aid to Ukraine on Dec 27.

Freeland was clearly and unambiguously conflicted during the discussions with Ukraine around this aid and remains in conflict of interest every day she remains an MP. She has also breached Canada’s Conflict of Interest law for MPs in the process.

And when will she actually get around to resigning? We don’t know. Could be tomorrow, could be six months from now.

Once again, given the choice of doing the right thing and behaving in an ethical manner, or doing what’s convenient for the Liberal Party of Canada, they choose Party over everything else. This shit is exactly the kind of reason why voters didn’t give them the majority Carney is trying to wheedle himself into.

  11. Is anyone else bothered that she was a major driver of sending billions of Canadian tax dollars to Ukraine — and then turned around and joined the Ukrainian government?

That’s a massive conflict of interest, yet it’s barely being discussed. Instead, we’re arguing over party politics and how long we should keep paying her salary while she effectively works for another country.

The corruption isn’t hidden. It’s happening in plain sight, and our politicians are too busy competing in the scandal Olympics for anyone to be held accountable.

  12. C’est ça un pays post national, ça veut juste dire que c’est runné comme un hedge fund et que tout est à vendre y compris les politiciens.

    Un pays libéral.

  13. So she planned to resign for a while now, accepted an offer from one of Canada’s allies to assist them, one she has a close history with. The she immediately stepped down from one position and announced she will be resigning as an MP in the next few weeks.

    What’s the problem here?

Politicians just running over us on a regular basis – all politicians are ripping us off

  15. Parliament doesn’t resume until the 21st. The holidays just ended and she said she was resigning. I think it’s fair to give her until then.

But I’m not the globe and mail, I don’t make money off generating rage engagement
