OMTAS is effective against armored targets and can be used both during the day and at night, regardless of weather conditions.
Kosovo has received a delivery of OMTAS anti-tank missile systems from Turkey, official representatives announced, as reported by BGNES.
Acting Minister of Defense Eyüp Makedonci explained that the delivery was agreed with the Turkish state-owned manufacturer Roketsan in December 2023.
He described OMTAS (Orta Menzilli Tanksavar Silah) as a modern medium-range anti-tank missile system developed to neutralize modern armored vehicles, including tanks with reactive protection, as well as military defensive fortifications. According to him, increasing the variety and quantity of anti-tank systems for the Kosovo Security Force aims to cover different ranges of action, terrains, and threat scenarios, thereby increasing operational flexibility.
Macedonians did not specify how many systems the country had received, nor the value of the delivery, RSE writes.
Information on the Roketsan website indicates that OMTAS is effective against armored targets and can be used both during the day and at night, regardless of weather conditions. The system allows firing from both military vehicles and tripod platforms.
The missile complex has a range of 0.2 to 4 kilometers, and its total weight—the missile together with the launch tube—is 35 kilograms. Its diameter is 160 millimeters, and its length is 1.8 meters.
In recent years, Kosovo has accelerated its armament process, purchasing weapons mainly from the United States and Turkey, including missiles and drones. The country is in the process of transforming the Kosovo Security Force into a regular army, a process that began in 2018 and is planned to continue for ten years. | BGNES
