Democrats have retained two seats in Virginia’s General Assembly after winning a pair of special elections by significant margins on Tuesday night.
Democrat Mike Jones defeated Republican John Thomas to win the election in the Virginia Senate District 15, a seat vacated by state Senator Ghazala Hashmi last year.
The sad truth is that Donald Trump and his Republicans are putting countries like Venezuela and Greenland ahead of America. The focus should be on the lives of Americans.

My state legislative seat was up for a special election last night. It’s been a solid R district. Last time I checked the Dem was trailing by only 21 votes. Unbelievably close.

This is all great news, but it will be squandered if Democrats don’t do anything with it. Remember the 2022 “blue tsunami,” which did nothing but led to Democrats in positions of authority in the party getting complacent and it led to this place becoming even more of an echo chamber than it already had been, convinced that Donald Trump would get destroyed in the 2024 election.
Donald Trump is a drain on the Republican party, but if Democrats take power and then immediately cast themselves as nothing more than anti-trump voices, Republicans will react in 26 and 28 exactly the same way as they did in 24.
The best thing that Democrats can do is focus on American issues, focus on affordability and the economy, break with previous party Orthodoxy on those topics, and ignore Donald Trump as much as possible.Â
Edit: I should have put quotes around “blue tsunami.” After the special elections in 2021 and the Roe ruling in June 22 the Dems were supposed to get this huge outpouring of women and liberal voters suddenly discovering their power to drive policy, and instead nothing of the sort happened. The Dems just managed to tread water, hence my “nothing happened” line. Poor explanation of my intent on my part.

It would have been really cool if people showed up like this a little over a year ago.
It’s not as if Trump and the Republicans/MAGA cult were an unknown.

All of these Dems scored big. Flipped a seat. Nothing has changed nothing is changing and it’s getting worse.

Careful Dems, keep winning and Trump will cancel all the elections /s

Newsweek is a terrible source. There’s nothing in the article to support the overperforming claim. They held two seats with 70 and 79 percent of the vote, so these seats were pretty secure. Overperforming suggests that these margins were higher than expected but there is nothing in the article that says this.

Fantastic to see but can we please get some additional political parties going…

Well, yeah.
It’s a state full of federal employees and contractors who got laid off.
They’re not happy.
Also it’s a state Trump has lost three times. He’s not liked here.
