Sometimes I question the age of this person. I don’t think us in Finland can rely on the US for defense. The worst is that much of that 5% Finland will invest will go straight to US economy, not EU.

You just described in the title why he wanted Europe to increase military spending. And why it angered his administration when Europe started buying weapons from the European weapons producers.
The entire point is to take advantage of the European economy to boost the American military industry. The tariffs and other trade investments are supposed to boost the civilian industry in general.
Europe and America together are equal to China in industrial capacity right now. With India’s Capacity being the size of Germany’s capacity. Making India a less important player. So he want’s the European capacity to migrate to America and rival China by itself.
All of which costs money. A LOT of money. And he spent his first year travelling from country to country to have them invest in the American industry for that reason.
He doesn’t care that this will harm Europe, we pretty much know that he has decided that Europe is an inferior subject to be held in a leash and not an ally at this point.
