Former Liberal MP Chandra Arya was as obvious an agent as they come.
He was in Canada’s parliament, blatantly doing the bidding of a foreign nation, justifying acts of terror against Canadian on Canadian soil.
If Canada wants to be a serious country, it needs to back this foreign agent registry, with extremely severe penalties for violating it.
Life imprisonment should be the base level penalty. The individual wouldn’t have to be jailed for life, but their activities would become subject to monitoring for the rest of their life.

Every government we have ever had could have done something about this but chose not to. Our current government continues to choose not to. I would say “write your member of parliament” but statistically they’re a Liberal or a Conservative and neither give a fuck. Maybe send a message by not voting for any of the mainstream parties in the next election.

I support the registry and want it to be robust but I think people might misread “foreign agents” in the title as “spies”. As noted further down in the article, most people on the list are neither hiding nor doing anything inappropriate. It’s normal for embassies to hire local staff, consultants, public relations experts, etc. The registry will make this information more transparent and give police an extra tool against actual spies, but 99.9% of the people on the list are harmless.
