A criminal case has been sent to the Riga City Court against a dual Estonian-Russian citizen, who is accused of attempting to violate sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) by attempting to transport a large amount of firearm ammunition components across the Latvian border and deliver them to Russia, the prosecutor’s office said on January 8th.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the man purchased 10,000 bullet casings, a strategic commodity subject to sanctions, from an unidentified person for delivery to Russia for use. The defendant hid the packages of bullets in the driver’s cab of his truck under the sleeping area, wrapping them in black bags and placing them in a toolbox – giving a clear indication of criminal intent.
On September 27 of last year, the man – who has not been named – attempted to transport the bullets across the Latvian border to deliver them to Russia.Â
The Customs Department of the State Revenue Service found the hidden bullets at the Terehova customs control point and arrested the person.
In response to Russia’s disgusting military aggression against Ukraine, the EU has banned the direct or indirect sale, supply, transfer or export of firearms, their parts and essential components, as well as ammunition for firearms and their components to Russia.Â
