I know it's 3 am but looking a the map, what if, just if, the bushfire spreads to metro Melbourne ?

Like what can we do? What are the emergency measures?

  1. Has a fire ever spread to metro Melbourne before? Genuinely asking, I don’t know. I would hope that being in a built-up area with less vegetation would be protective.

Yeah I’m near Cheltenham and I’m a bit worried bc of parklands like park rd reserve and Bradshaw park in Mordi. Even braeside park or Kakarook park

Can’t imagine the anxiety those rural would be feeling or even up in the hills like Ferntree gully

  3. I’m in Central Victoria. Can’t sleep and the power has gone out. Debating whether to leave and go to Melbourne.

  4. i’m at the junction of the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, and seeing that red is really scary 😟

Melbourne will be smoked out, filling hospitals with asthma patients, wear a P2 mask for protection.

  6. Firstly, if you live in the outer suburbs, have a bushfire plan and monitor for warnings and any potential advice to leave.

Having said that though, the bushfire in the Seymour area is extremely unlikely to threaten metropolitan Melbourne. The winds will blow it eastwards, not towards the city. That’s not to say another fire couldn’t possibly spark and be a threat but the Longwood fire itself won’t threaten Melbourne barring some sort of freak wind conditions that are practically unheard of for Victoria.

  7. I’m out with my partner holidaying in Mt Beauty, we were planning to be here til Saturday. She’s sleeping fine but I’m warm and being a newbie to aus this is, while not m nerve wracking necessarily, quite distracting for my brain. Luckily we’re not in a catastrophic area, but still. Looking at the map it does feel a bit like we’re surrounded. All the locals seem relaxed though.

  8. Is it just me that finds it annoying VicEmergency lists some weather warnings and the TFB as incidents instead of warnings?
My heart leaps when I see these 2 incidents in my watch area.

This is what happens when we don’t take climate catastrophe seriously

  10. Already doesn’t look good. I just woke up because my house was rumbling from the wind. I legit thought the apocalypse was starting.

  11. For those of us that can’t sleep and want to keep an even closer eye/ear on things – there are a number of live emergency service radio broadcasts available online that allow you to listen in on various comms between CFA brigades and dispatch, Fire Rescue Vic, State Emergency Comms Centre etc.

This CFA dispatch broadcast covers part of the Longwood fire area including Seymour, Yea etc:

**Mental health warning:** you may occasionally find some information shared on these broadcasts confronting and distressing. Please only listen if you feel safe to do so.

    Take care everyone!

  12. I’m laying here unable to sleep. I’m meant to be driving from Melbourne to Echuca tomorrow for work. I’m kind of an essential worker, but it still feels a bit insane driving into that area when everyone else is evacuating.

  13. That’s a crazy difference. I’m close to Werribee and it’s only 15 here and still as anything.
