Why would the satrapy called Airstrip One do anything to upset it’s masters?

  2. Safe-Avocado4864 on

Why would they? Seems like a fairly easy thing to say yes to since America is unlikely to want to go to Greenland via Scotland in the first place.

  3. I doubt the US is going to invade Greenland anyway but if it is its not going to go via the UK its on the other side of the North Atlantic. They will simply go from the mainland US which is considerably closer.

  4. Northumbrianbloke on

I am confident that the British public (and not the bots, apologists and lettuces of Reddit) will show some objection.

  5. They need to ask permission to use UK bases, so no doubt we would say no if they were stupid enough to ask.

That aside… Why on earth would they need UK bases? Isn’t the USA closer then us, or at least close to the same distance from the other way?

Oh, it’s just  Ed Davey asking a question he knows won’t get answered but will get a headline.

  6. Never mind not using our bases, we should be sending soldiers to help our allies kill the invaders if they try

  7. ResponsiblePatient72 on

From the headline i assumed this was meaning that they were pushing him to kick all the Americans in RAF bases up and down the country out the moment the US launches an attack on Greenland.

Instead all its calling for is to rule out the attack actually originating from here… Christ.

For what its worth, if the US did attack Greenland, i’d want every American armed forces member ejected from the country that night. I suspect the same would happen across Europe.

  8. If the US attacks Greenland then every US service member in the UK needs to be removed. Along with any diplomats. Let alone using our bases

  9. Remarkable_Figure95 on

Starmer will next be seen hanging little stars and stripes flags on bases to welcome our guests.

  10. The US isn’t going to attack Greenland. So why the fuck would Kier bother alienating and souring relations with Trump about a scenario that isn’t going to happen?

  11. Obviously the UK would not tolerate an attack on NATO from its soil. However, before any of that happens we have to act as if we will continue to be allies.

Any *public* discussion from the PM himself on contingency plans could antagonise the gilded moron in chief. That includes public comments on ‘ruling out’ things.

  12. This . . . shouldn’t even be in question as an option.

Greenland is part of Denmark, who are part of NATO.

If the US invades Greenland, we are bound by treaty to defend Greenland – which means we certainly won’t be basing any US forces in the country for the foreseeable future – and if we do, then we’re withdrawing from NATO in favour of being a US state, something which should certainly go to the electorate.

  13. We should stop cooperating with the Dozy Don and the USA. Take over all Dozy Dons golf courses and put windmills and solar panels on them.

  14. Slight-Strategy-5619 on

Don’t sell the UK’s soul. The PM needs to set out now what the position is and make it clear no ifs or buts. The UK can hold its own together with the rest of the allies. Who is after Greenland then?

  15. Greenland is important to US national security. They want it and they can take it quite easily. If (or when) they do, there is nothing anybody can do to stop them.

But at that point the relationship between the US and Europe, including the UK, changes. Completely. They are no longer an ally. We can still trade with them, but we can no longer trust them or rely on them for anything. We should look at everything we currently rely on them for, and start finding alternatives.

  16. Kind_Dream_610 on

Get the headline right. The US won’t attack Greenland, Trump will tell corrupt military leaders, who will order the gullible fools beneath them, to attack. Decent people in America don’t want this, but they’re too terrified to do anything to stop it themselves.

If Starmer does allow the UK to be used, then he should be tried as a war criminal for aiding it. And he should be prosecuted, along with Trump, for betraying the other NATO allies.

  17. Trump probably is going to attack Greenland. There’s too much smoke from him.

It’s strategically placed geographically and is absolutely full of rare earth metals. The Yanks will be on it like a fly to shite.

I think the instant the US does it, we need to eject every single U.S. diplomat and soldier from the UK. They’ve just committed a hostile act against NATO, which we’re in.

The real issue is if they bluntly refuse to leave our bases. Which I think they might. Could get extremely nasty quickly.

  18. painteroftheword on

The USA already has a military base in Greenland.

I doubt they need to attempt to run anything from the UK

  19. Sorry-Programmer9826 on

This is the worst timetime. I though he was being asked to rule out using British bases to *relatilate* against a US invasion. Not to rule out helping the US invade.

How have we got to the point where both those things are plausible

  20. going by the general professionalism of US troops shown in the gulf, all the greenlanders will have to do is hide and wait while the americans whittle themselves down with friendly fire incidents

  21. Resident_Leopard_770 on

Rule out use? Kick us out (I’m a US Citizen). Cut trade and slap sanctions on us. Expell us from NATO and send troops in support of Denmark to Greenland. Get the EU to do the same. Divest in every possible way from the US. The World has to reject this insanity.

  22. Max_Abbott_1979 on

The us are already using our bases, they’re not going to stop just because Keith tells them to.

  23. Every-Switch2264 on

Cut off the water, electricity, everything to the bases of the fascist traitors

  24. BruceForsyth55 on

I mean I currently want American bases removed from the UK. I don’t believe the US would take action against Russia or anyone else to be honest if it went south so what’s the fucking point in em being here.

The US is a basket case right now who can’t be trusted.

  25. TurbulentLifeguard11 on

If Orange Pedo does decide to go all in on Greenland all guns blazing then Starmer better know where his red lines are in his brown nosing appeasement strategy he currently seems to be running.

I would support nothing less than the Russia treatment for the US if they attach a NATO ally.

  26. kuddlesworth9419 on

They should be expelled from the country if they invade Greenland. We obviously won’t do that though because we have no spine.

  27. Any-Statistician3896 on

The only reason why trump wants Greenland is as a backup for WHEN the Ukraine loses.

He no doubt wants to reignite the cold war by placing bases, anti ballistic missiles and nukes in closer range. Any attack from Alaska would be very anticipated and useless.

But having bases and permanent nukes in Greenland means if it goes conventional and Russia steam rollers through Europe, Greenland will be a deterrent.

Especially if NATO don’t agree, then trump already has a shield essentially.

But all of this is bollox. Because nothing is happening nor going to happen 🤣

  28. As a Brit I would be furious if Starmer allowed the US to attack another NATO member from UK soil. In fact I would threaten to shoot their aircraft down if they attempted to do so.

  29. Any-Swing-3518 on

Starmer can “face calls” forever, he isn’t going to be drawn on such matters, because they are above his pay grade. When are people going to realize that the British PM — or at least, one who faithfully serves the Establishment like this dalek — is lower down the org-chart than the president of the US and the prime minister of Israel.

  30. SignalButterscotch73 on

Huh?… but there are NATO bases in Greenland that the USA has access to already, they can invade from in Greenland. Why would they need any other European bases?

  31. The fact this is a question that needs asking… The fact Starmer still hasn’t said it yet.

  32. No-Letterhead9608 on

Starmer can’t sit on the fence any longer. Are we an American vassal state or not? Time to decide

  33. I think the reality here is that Starmer shouldn’t say a word yet. Doing as the call suggests, and from what the plebs are allowed to know currently, it wouldnt help diplomacy.

Yes, the US has said they are discussing options and thst military action might be the option, but up until the point that an imminent threat and/or request is sent (i assume they’d have to coordinate with UK airforce), he should stay silent on the matter publicly.

  34. I mean, the UK should absolutely not let the US use any British bases for an attack on Greenland (easy win for you there Starmer).

But the US literally has a military base in Greenland. Idrk why they would use the British bases. If the US does attack Greenland, it isn’t gonna be them bombing the country, they’ll just put their army on Greenland and announce it is theirs now. Using British bases will probably hinder the operation more.

  35. RebelliousInNature on

I’d like to see him ruling in ejection of the US bases in the UK. If you’re not an ally, we don’t want you here.
