A man was found drowned in the Albanian city of Durres, as emergency crews worked around the clock to evacuate dozens of people from flooded homes hit by heavy rainfall.

Western Balkan countries have been suffering disruptions caused by snow and other winter weather since Sunday, including road and rail closures, power outages and problems with drinking water supplies, Reuters reports.

Emergency crews used boats to evacuate residents trapped in flooded homes in areas around the other southwestern Albanian cities of Fjera and Vlora, after the Vjosa River rose to more than nine meters, Albania’s Defense Ministry said.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the body of a 55-year-old utility worker, who went missing on Tuesday, was found in a drainage canal in Durres, presumed to have been swept away by a flash flood.

Emergency services said they were working to pump water out of around 800 homes and buildings, after around 300 people were taken care of in army and police facilities.

In neighboring Kosovo, where large areas of land have been flooded in recent days, the rain has been replaced by snow today. Snow has also hit Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the Croatian capital, Zagreb, a temperature of minus 14 degrees Celsius was measured this morning, while meteorologists are announcing a new wave of cold with even lower temperatures for Sunday.
