Why isn’t Europe banning US digital services companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook? All other world powers have and built their own.

  1. i mean, china did that and then everyone including you guys have been bashing them about it since the day it happened saying that it is anti freedom. yes i know they VERY STRICTLY control media but their ban reason was never about only media block, it was only about money and not letting them spread misinformation and propaganda(at least this sub finally see that it is real and not conspiracy theory any more) was just icing on cake. why would they let american IT companies utilize and monetize 1.4b peoples IT/social media needs?

why you think its gonna be any different when EU does it?

also i would like to remind everyone that whoever hang out in EU sub long enough would know that only couple years ago even mentioning about social apps bombarding propaganda/brainwashing stuff/playing with algorythms to cherry pick content and stupify young people etc etc etc… would get hundreds of downvotes, told back to go to russia, china whatever and would get subjected to 20 different kind of tinfoil hat jokes

    oh how the table turns

Because these companies have millions of employees in Europe as well, so banning them will hurt the ordinary people’s jobs and livelihoods, best thing Europe can do is to invest billions in its own platforms that already exist and work well, US government gives so much $$$ to techno giants and mega corporations to keep them cutting edge, Europe should do the same.

  3. Here’s an idea, maybe the european citizens should just stop using them

    It’s that easy and simple

  4. Because people will absolutely hate it and that would also mean spending money for support, developing and management of new services. Just imagine suggesting to stop using MS services at your workplace and that people need to learn something new.

So what’s the play here the US and Europe just ban all of each others biggest companies? Seems well thought out

  6. Well for one they have a strong presence here and there aren’t any real competitors to take their place.

Imagine how hard it would be on both the private and public sectors when Google and AWS dissappear.

Secondly that would be a big precedent that would discourage investments and might lead to many European companies leaving for the US.

Then you have the response from the US, probably in the form of huge sanctions, likely accompanied by sanctions from other countries as well.

And then we have public opinion.
There’s already a lot of scepticism towards the EU from the rising far right and a big pushback across the politcal sphere towards laws like chat control.
Imagine now all people losing access to Google and YouTube, to Amazon and all services that use Amazon’s servers.

What would people rightfully think of the EU when it starts banning social medias and search engines?

What will the people, businesses, investors and other nations think when the EU starts banning foreign software and services, just because we can’t compete with them?

The solution towards the reliance on American big tech is to foster an environment where we can produce our own, on par or with better quality.

  7. It’s citizens shouldn’t wait for the EU and Euro’fy their own IT away from the US..

  8. Because there are no alternatives.

When you look at China, they banned American tech AFTER they built their own. Europe needs to build alternatives so that it can get rid of American Big Tech. You can’t just ban things, then start building an alternative afterwards. It doesn’t work that way.

The alternative has to already exist when you ask people to make the shift, which means step 1 is making the alternative platforms.

  9. Because Europe can’t do software. All the Europeans who can work for the US. Those that don’t have to fight with boomer CEO’s micro managing stuff they don’t understand. Sure there are 1 or two good software houses but they are so expensive no one buys their stuff.

  10. Europe is starting to realise what’s what.
But it takes time to build our own services
So EU gov is playing for time.

Because we export at least as much to the US as we import. There are European medicines, cars, industrial components, etc.

Trump specifically wants to reduce imports. All he needs is domestic support. He would love nothing more than Europe giving him a moral excuse with his peers to increase tariffs.

Best I’ve seen of this was in the UAE.

“Oh you have a new ride sharing service called Uber! Great! Welcome!”

Banned. Now we build our own service and we’re gonna call it Kareem.

“Oh welcome Uber, long time no see. You want to acquire Kareem from us in order to do business here? Yes, let’s negotiate my friend!”

Uber buys a stake in Kareem, local government is still in full control but they get a fat wad of cash from US SaaS company. Rinse and repeat for each SaaS.

Too late. Should’ve done this a decade ago. Once again, China was 2 steps ahead

  14. Dependency and a lack of better alternatives to be honest. There is some interest in moving on to other platforms, but in my experience it is very small and probably won’t amount to anything substantial.

Amazon is probably the easiest to kick, but Google, Facebook (Meta), Microsoft and Apple is used for basically everything else and all of social media. Not just in Europe, but across the world.

And that’s just on a surface level. I don’t know how many other pieces of technology we use that are actually using Google, Microsoft or Meta code in the background.

So overall, it’s just not realistic.

  15. Another thing people are not really talking about here is that this is a process that will take a lot of time. There aren’t scalable or equivalent services in Europe available yet at this point for a lot of private or enterprise users.

It also is not very helpful to signal all at once that you’re going to kick American companies to the curb (costing them billions and billions in revenue), especially when there are no readily available alternatives in place. With this US administration, that would be *extremely* dangerous.

Overall in my opinion this is similar to the defense contractors. People complain on this sub about “why are EU governments still buying US stuff, they’re clearly complacent” but until the production chains and actual product designs are created to replace US materiel (and that takes a lot of time) they can’t signal som huge break without risking a backlash.

Another important comparison on GLSS systems: the only real alternatives to (American) GPS used to be Russia’s GLOSNASS, luckily that one is something Europe has been addressing for decades with the GALILEO constellation so Europe is now mostly independent of the US in that regard at least.

  16. Because we traded our power for security with the US. Now the US is withdrawing its security from us. Now we’re completely vulnerable.

  17. All other world power… who else behind China you refer to? A dictatorship wanting to control everything.
    Rage bait/karma farming.
