Statistics Canada says it is hiring about 32,000 workers nationwide as it prepares to conduct the 2026 census this spring.
The agency said Tuesday that census workers will be recruited for both supervisory and non-supervisory roles to support data collection ahead of the May 2026 census. The information gathered helps governments and organizations make decisions related to child care, education, health care, housing, transportation and community planning.
Employment opportunities will be available between March and July 2026, depending on the position and location. Statistics Canada said pay rates are $25.87 per hour for enumerators and $31.32 per hour for crew leaders, with authorized expenses such as mileage and parking reimbursed.
Enumerators are responsible for collecting completed census questionnaires, primarily through door-to-door visits. The positions require availability of at least 20 hours per week on average, with most work taking place during evenings and weekends. Enumerator contracts generally run from May to July 2026.
Crew leaders will supervise and support teams of enumerators, oversee census operations within assigned areas and assist with training and coordination. These positions require full-time availability, including days, evenings and weekends, and are expected to run from March to July 2026.
To be eligible, applicants must have reached the age of majority in their province or territory, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or hold a valid work permit, and reside in Canada with a Canadian home address. The age of majority is 18 in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Prince Edward Island, and 19 in the remaining provinces and territories.
Statistics Canada said the hiring process includes initial screening, reference checks, interviews for crew leader roles and security screening. Only selected applicants will be contacted.
