  1. Honestly with everything going on right now I only see that number going down, even with American involvement in the campaign.

  2. Headline is deceiving since the article clearly states “***less than***” 1 in 5 (19%) would vote to separate from Canada. 75% would vote to stay and 11% are unsure.

  3. So the numbers are getting worse for the trumpers? It was closer to 23% last time than 20 wasn’t it ?

Saying 1 in 5 just makes it sound more dire. But these numbers aren’t a news article worth of difference from the last poll.

  4. This polling must be absolute cancer at UCP headquarters.

I guarantee every single ANDP voter or swing voter available to them are united in that 49% strongly oppose bloc, and that’s more than they need for a majority. I can’t imagine the separation curious NDP voter.

Meanwhile, Smith has all the problems of having the full spectrum of opinion in her base, that anything she says or does is going to piss someone off. 17% strongly support is too big to ignore, or win without. If they leave to start their own Alberta independence party, you’re done.

  5. There’s 3 camps. People that don’t want to separate. People that want to threaten to do so to get a better deal from Ottawa. People that actually want to separate.

I think people in camp 2 use whatever leverage they can but don’t want to separate. Most of Quebec does this all the time…we know it, they know it and they don’t have a monopoly on it.

I think people that have actually done the math and still want to leave is a much much smaller group than 20%. Even Danielle Smith was over the moon with the pipeline deal, she got booed by her own base. She’s in camp 2 but has to ride the line to keep the votes from the separatists.

  6. And probably most of those people don’t actually want to seperate but see it as away to leverage the federal government to get more investment in the province.

  7. Since the majority of people that support seperation are rural I can see Smith somehow try to manipulate the referendum by trying to give more weight to rural votes to ‘prevent the NDP dominated city centers’ from dominating the vote. She has already shown she doesn’t respect the Charter.

8 in 10 want to stay in Canada. Makes it sound even more definitive.

We’re dealing with a small foreign funded rump of cranks…some of whom are already dual citizens and served in the US marines.

There really needs to be a safety measure in for something like imperialism. Are there any checks and balances in place to ensure this doesn’t happen?

Not to harp on the media, but 1/5 is 20%… if I’m not mistaken, this is DOWN from previous polls, but that is not what you’d be led to believe from the headline.

  11. You know what a slightly better headline would be that would sell less clicks?

New poll suggests four in five Albertans wouldn’t vote to separate.
