(Horizon Weekly) – Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Turkey’s regional objectives closely align with those of the United States, particularly regarding developments in the South Caucasus, according to remarks made to Azerbaijani media and reporters.
Fidan stated that Ankara and Washington share overlapping positions on a range of regional issues, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Syria, but emphasized that coordination is especially pronounced in the South Caucasus. He noted that the United States is exerting pressure on Armenia to advance the peace process, characterizing this convergence as part of a broader geopolitical alignment.
His comments come amid recent diplomatic developments in Washington. On August 8, 2025, a trilateral meeting was held at the White House between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, after which a joint declaration was signed.
In Washington, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also initialled the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan,” in the presence of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States.
The current peace process, however, does not address key issues facing Armenia. These include guarantees for Armenia’s security and territorial integrity, the continued detention of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan, and the right of return for Armenians forcibly displaced from Artsakh. The absence of provisions dealing with these matters raises questions about the substance and sustainability of the proposed peace framework.
