Disclaimer – I am not part of MDG and neither did I vote for them.

Having that out of the way, I am pretty sure that most of us have heard about one of their promises which is a Norway transport monthly card that would cost 499NOK and would allow you to travel across the whole Norway. It would include all public transports except flying.

Personally, I think that this is an amazing idea and would benefit us greatly. From what I understood they have already started to push this for 2027 and it is being looked at.

The reason I am making this post is that on their website they have a poll where you can voice your opinion on if you would like to see this monthly card or not and I think that if we want to see any changes we should voice our opinions.

  1. “Månedskort til 499 kroner for hele landet vil ifølge ulike beregninger koste staten mellom 3 og 6 milliarder kroner i året. Men det blir lite forhold til hvor mange milliarder andre partier vil bruke på store, naturødeleggende motorveiprosjekter.”

Jeg er usikker på om månedskort til 499 kroner er den beste måten å bruke 6 milliarder i året kroner på. Det blir en del togprosjekter eller veiprosjekter av så mye penger

Sounds like a massive subsidy for people with long commutes. Good for them, I guess, but not sure it’s the best use of money.

  3. Would benefit commuters to and from Oslo and people in Oslo mainly as I see it, however the trains in and out of Oslo are already well beyond reasonable capacity in rush hour. Outside of Oslo, and student in the big cities very few people use their personal cars because of the cost of the monthly bus pass is to high. Generally it’s because using public transportation is hopeless. In reality this would subsidize a lot of the people already taking the train, but the money this costs would be way better used on actual investments into public transportation rather than just lowering the price, especially if the reason for doing it is to get more people to use public transport. If the reason is for people already using public transport to save money then its a different story, but I would assume MDG has bigger plans.

  4. Sure, it could be a fine idea. But MDG completely failed to get it in the budget negotiations. Keep ion mind it will cost many billions and that public transport already lacks quite a bit of funding. So reduced prices should also come with more funding for transport.

  5. It would be great. But honestly I’d be quite happy If with the Ruter All Zones wasn’t TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND KRONERS A YEAR.

Whenever someone brings up UBI I always mention that a first step should be free/significantly subsidised public transport.
Let people circulate freely in their city/metro area and they’ll be more free to make decisions on where to live, where to work etc…

  7. They used to have something very similar in Switzerland, maybe they still do? Seemed to be very well liked there.

This is exactly what Norway needs. I live just outside Oslo (25kms away) and pay almost 2000 nok per month for the train. That’s absolutely insane. Public transportation should be easily accessible.

If 499 is too low I think even 999 per month is fine but anything above that is too much.
