Hi all, hopefully this post is allowed as my fiancé and I are running out of options at this point.

We are looking for a long term foster home for our two beautiful cats as we are moving overseas for approximately 2-3 years and due to the work will be away for several weeks a month which means we can't look after them or give them the home that they deserve.

James is a 12 year old domestic short hair (black cat) who gets along with small dogs, kids and other cats and loves to sit on your lap and cuddle in bed. He is fully litter trained and has previously been an indoor outdoor cat but has been fully indoors the last 4 years.

Alfred is a 6 year old exotic short hair (black and white) who also gets along with small dogs and other cats but will hide from young kids (never attacked just runs away) but is very friendly to everyone else.

We have exhausted all other options and it would break our hearts if we had to surrender them. They have lived apart so if you are only interested in one of them all we want to know is that they have a good home and getting taken care of. Happy to discuss financial supports/arrangements to ensure they are getting taken care of.

Please PM me if you are interested or have any suggestions at all.

Good luck. It will be really hard leaving family that have grown up with you behind.

  2. If you contact a local vet or cat rescue, they may be able to help by putting a post up for their followers (ie. an audience of interested cat people).

[ETA: Just noticed timeframe added to the post while I was typing, disregard below!]

I think it would help to be more specific about the time frame, too – whether “temporary foster care” here would be three months, a year, three years, etc, even approximately.

Moving overseas sounds pretty permanent/long-term, so if it’s going to be a long-term situation (like over a year), you might be better off finding someone to adopt them rather than a temporary foster – maybe someone who would keep in touch/send photos/let you visit/etc?

  3. I wish I could help my girl HATES male cats unfortunately 😞 but good luck I hope you find beautiful homes for your babies.

  4. Kindly, you probably aren’t “temporarily” rehoming a cat who is already 12 years old. I think you would do better to offer them to someone who can agree to love them the rest of their lives. I recently took on a workmates cat when she quickly had to leave the country but I went into it knowing there was no way I could enforce any financial assistance after she had left the country because if they choose not to stay in contact there’s nothing I could do. And this is someone I knew personally. I think anyone who was willing to take a Reddit stranger’s moggies would likely feel the same way.

I still think rehoming them yourself is the very best you can do. I would suggest asking your vet, and if they don’t know anyone, I would ask Shantel at Feline Fine mobile vets because she is a kitty cat guardian angel and she might know someone who has recently lost a senior cat or similar.

you could try the below, or they may at least be able to point you in the right direction.

    Animal Rescue Organisations

    * **RSPCA Queensland**: The RSPCA has a large foster care program and may be able to place animals for an extended period, particularly if they are older or have specific needs. You can find more information on the [RSPCA Queensland website](https://www.rspcaqld.org.au/volunteer/foster) or by calling **1300 ANIMAL (264 625)**.
    * **Best Friends Felines (BFF)**: This organisation is dedicated to rescuing cats and kittens and placing them in foster homes until they find a permanent home, regardless of how long it takes, as they have a no-kill policy. You can contact them through their [Best Friends Felines website](https://www.bestfriendsfelines.com/).
    * **Safe Haven Animal Rescue Inc. (SHARI)**: SHARI operates in-home animal rescues around Brisbane and relies on volunteer foster carers for short and long-term placements. Information on applying to be a foster carer is available on the [Safe Haven Animal Rescue Inc. website](https://www.safehavenanimalrescueinc.com/foster).
    * **Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ)**: AWLQ provides foster homes for pets for various reasons, including those needing time to recover or older cats who take a while to rehome. Details about their program can be found on the [Animal Welfare League QLD website](https://www.awlqld.com.au/fostering/).
    * **Animals in Need Brisbane**: This group also utilizes foster homes to care for animals awaiting their permanent homes and accepts expressions of interest from potential carers via their [Animals in Need Brisbane website](https://www.animals-in-need-brisbane.com.au/foster/).

cant you take them with you? Its not that expensive to fly with cats.

Bringing them back into Australia will be changing but they have reduced the requirements depending on the location.

Why did you take an OS job when you have dependants? I have turned down multiple jobs as I couldn’t find appropriate carers. What you are saying is “we are abandoning our pets for a money”. I would never give up my dog or cat for money.

  8. Oh OP you poor thing. This is so hard.

If you haven’t contacted Best Friend Felines give them a try. They are amazing and either can help or can suggest some ideas. They have a lot of foster carers.

Could you also put posters up at the vet? I have two cats and take them to the Cat Clinic.
