A yellow (potential danger) weather alert has been issued for a large part of Kurzeme region on Sunday, January 11th by the Latvian Environment, Gelology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC).

The area of heaviest snowfall is expected to extend from Cape Kolka along the Gulf of Rīga, extending inland a considerable distance. However, Latvia’s western coastline, including Ventspils and Liepāja, is not included in the snow zone.

Though the yellow alert identifies an area of particularly heavy snowfall, other parts of the country are also likely to see more of the white stuff descending, and drivers in particular are urged to proceed with caution and to consider if their journeys are really necessary.

On Sunday across Latvia, the sky will be mostly cloudy, snowfall will continue in many places and the thickness of the snow cover will increase by 2 to 4 centimetres, in places in the west by 5 to 7 centimetres. Visibility will deteriorate in some places, and roads will be slippery.

A slow to moderate north to northeasterly wind will blow, gusting up to 15 metres per second on the Kurzeme coast. The air temperature will be between -4 Celsius and -9 Celsius, a few degrees warmer along the Kurzeme coast.

In Rīga on Sunday, it will also be mostly cloudy, with occasional snow. There will be a slow to moderate northerly wind, and the maximum air temperature will be from -5 C to -7 C.
