Not a plumber but what makes you think you got ripped off?

Plumbers are fucked. You got charged the standard rate – a lot.

A $1000 charge for fitting two valves… And they were already onsite for other work.
How long did all this take if you broke it down to an hourly rate?
Faelinor on
You paid it with thanks? Sounds like you got a bargain.

Yes and no.
Because of nanny state australia plumbing is a licenced trade, and therfor can change like this.
If you have a good amount of mechanical aptatude you could have repaired all of these yourself, with a trip to tradelink or anyother plumbing retailes.
(plumbers are a contensious bunch, so enjoy the responces to this comment because.)
spelling and grammer, is shit and i simply dont care.

It took him 3 hrs I have to work 50 hours to earn that much feeling ripped off? Valves and new toilet screw can’t cost that much! That’s why I need a plumber to confirm! Paid it already but it seems excessive

How long were they there for? Hourly rate probably $120 plus gst if just the one person. Parts wouldn’t have been more than $100. So yeah you kinda got ripped but a fair price maybe have been $300 or $400 less.

For 3 hours work for residential plumbing, and no parts ordered and then installed. Yes you were ripped off.

Last year I had a plumber out to fix a hot water failure, turned out to be a failing tempering valve. Got that replaced.
At the same time I had issues with my toilet filling and that needed a new isolation valve and connector hose.
Cost me under $500.
I’d say you got a bad deal.

I’m no plumber, but a quick Google of costs:
Labour $450
Valves $100
Bolts and washer $10
Form 4 QLD $35
So about $600. Add on a bit for beers in the arvo, make it $700

materials on toilet
Time allowed 1 hour probably
(Ripped here)
For the pressure reduction valve, that’s generally around the right price $400 -450 (fair )
tempering valve change out body alone? Or was there pipe work done ?
25minutes and about $200+ for new valve.
(Ripped)
Don’t forget, call out fees are factored into the price.
Roughly 600-800 mark is fair
Just keep in mind, it is very expensive to operate a business for any trade at the moment and you are paying for certification on your installs and covered under his insurance
Dependent-Mess-7510 on
yeah the toilet thing seems excessive, can’t judge on the other stuff though.

The descriptions used to describe the work carried out are drummed up to make it all sound a lot more work was done and more difficult than what it is. Bloke has definitely been in sales before.

I own a residential maintenance plumbing company in Brisbane, and I can confirm this is a fair price.
You can’t turn a profit charging $100/hour anymore. Customers often compare tradie rates to their own hourly wage, but they don’t see the full picture.
Once you cover wages for plumbers on site ($50+/hour to stay competitive), insurance, vehicle running and maintenance costs, materials, and Google ads (which can cost $100–$200+ per lead before you even reach the job), overheads add up fast.
Advertising is essential to control workflow and keep the team busy consistently if you want to grow the business.
Most people expect jobs done at “mate’s rates,” but even their plumber mates won’t touch it for cheap because it’s simply not worth the effort.
agysykedyke on
They charged you the single item price for each job.
Like if you called them to do one of those they would charge that price because they have to drive there and waste time so it’s fair
