SWEDEN, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Transportation hosted a public open house at Sweden Town Hall in Brockport to discuss a major safety upgrade in Monroe County. The event took place from 4 to 6 p.m. and focused on a proposed project to reconstruct the intersection of state routes 31 and 31-A with County Route 236 by creating a modern roundabout.

The intersection is known for crashes and red-light violations. Some attendees supported the roundabout as a solution, while others favored widening the intersection.

“If you’re in a roundabout you just constantly move, you’re yielding to the traffic in the circle — cars keep moving, they’re going slower, so it’s safer for pedestrians, it’s safer for motorists, it’s safer for bicyclists,” said Mare Millow, public information officer with the NYS Department of Transportation.

“My opinion is they’d be better off widening the intersection, putting in left-hand turn lanes and … turn-arrow traffic lights as opposed to the roundabout,” said resident Ruth Moore.

The plan also includes new guide rails, drainage repairs, and updated signage. Construction is scheduled for 2027 and 2028.
