We’ve just heard from Vladimir Putin’s mouthpiece.
Italy, France and Germany have said they want to resume dialogue with Russia on Ukraine – a move described as a “significant step forward” by Dmitry Peskov.
Last week, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said “the time has come” for Europe to appoint a special envoy to talk to Moscow.
French President Emmanuel Macron also said last month that Ukraine’s allies would “need in the weeks ahead to find ways for Europeans to re-engage in a fulsome dialogue with Russia”.
“Peace will not establish itself on its own,” he said.
“To establish peace, joint efforts on a reciprocal basis are needed.
“And that’s exactly the point, it’s impossible to discuss the problem of Ukrainian settlement without talking about European security in a broader context.
“One way or another, security guarantees will address this issue.”
However, he added:
“London’s position is still rather destructive, but nevertheless, even these three capitals that were mentioned, the statements of three leaders – this is already a significant step forward from our point of view.”
