We don’t know if it was a Japanese national or a foreigner, but many racist Japanese users on Twitter have already started claiming it was probably a Chinese tourist who intentionally came to Japan to destroy cultural assets.
Their justification is that since a Chinese guy peed on Yasukuni Shrine, which enshrines Imperial Japan’s war criminals as “war heroes”, most Chinese must be agitated against Japanese and intentionally come as tourists to destroy Japan.
Can’t wait for this narrative to be the Kyoto version of kicking the deer
This kind of vandalism is especially shocking in Japan because of the traditional belief in Tenbatsu (divine punishment). The idea that such actions bring misfortune to oneself and their kin acts as a strong social and moral deterrent, which is why this behavior seems so surreal to the local community.
Japan and their sensationalist headlines. I thought American clickbait was bad.
Some minor vandalism is a far cry from destroys. I was expecting like the place to be ablaze with the headline. This is like the dueling headline the other day.

Shrine to Japanese war criminals gets peed on, more tragic news at 11….
If those people who put babies on swords could see this they would be super disappointed
The economy is a total mess, so there will probably be more people acting like that.
It was a gaijin fo sho!!
You can tell from the cctv footage in the news report that the perpetrator was drunk when he committed the vandalism. Not the first time a drunk person has done such a thing.
Destroyed? How about mild to moderately vandalized. I originally thought it might have been arson based on the headline, not just a drunk dude breaking signposts and a gate.
Lol people in Japan on $1.5k usd salary a month sure have a lot of time. Hahaha
