If the museum achieves its funding goals, the park could double the center’s square footage for hands-on exhibits and educational programs.
Eugene Science Center plans to double its size with the addition of an outdoor science park.
The center, which sees about 40,000 visitors a year, is expanding to accommodate additional exhibits, students, field trips and educational programming.
The new outdoor center is planned to feature at least six large hands-on exhibits, a dedicated early education section, benches, shade structures, landscaping and educational signage.
“This transformative project will greatly enhance the science center’s ability to deliver more educational programming to more community members and help the center meet the needs of children and families in our community for generations to come,” Tim Scott, Eugene Science Center executive director, said in a written statement.
So far, the center has received roughly $370,000 from foundation grants, local businesses and private donors. That’s about 72% of its $512,230 goal. A next step is to raise an additional $90,000, which will be matched by $50,000 from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust.
