I mean…if you think more about this metaphor it gets pretty dark. The America we grew up in was pretty and to everyone outside it looked happy and ideal, but behind the curtain there was deep abuse and exploitation going on. The positive, happy, sexy image that we presented to the world was effectively being pimped out by rich powerful men for their own benefit. For a long time that abuse was behind the scenes, in many ways we were unaware of just how deeply we were being exploited. These powerful men told us that they were doing it for our benefit but it was never really true.
Now we are living in the result, a country that has difficulty handling its own affairs because of deep emotional and mental scars and trauma from being exploited by the people controlling it for so long. A country that has money but has no control over it because the people running it have locked it into a system where it does all the labor and they reap the benefits. We would like to do things that benefit ourselves with our wealth but we can’t because our decisions always seem to get overridden by the rich, powerful men who control our lives.
(To be clear Britney Spears is no longer under her father’s conservatorship, but I imagine there is still a lot of difficulties stemming from such a difficult journey.)
