  1. (From the article) “Responding to the plan, [Department of Homeland Security](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/department-of-homeland-security) ([DHS](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/dhs)) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told *Newsweek*: “DHS is a law enforcement agency, and it will continue to carry out [immigration](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/immigration) enforcement for the safety of Americans who have been victimized by rapists, murderers, drug traffickers, and gang members.”

ICE should be abolished because it’s made up of those “rapists, murderers, drug traffickers, and gang members.”

They must dealt with how can the recognized as federal agents under mask and no name tags

  3. So funny question: if ICE does get abolished, does that mean Jonathan Ross loses his so-called “absolute immunity”?

This will never pass, and it never had a chance to, let’s be real here. The leaders of both parties want to keep ICE and there’s not nearly enough Dems that want to abolish ICE entirely. As much as I’d love for this to happen, let’s be real, it never will. We’re too far gone and this is all political posturing.

  5. This is not a serious legislative effort, pure virtue signaling nonsense. Some people will support it because everyone knows that it can go nowhere. Some people offer these nonsense bills so they can signal to their supporters that they are at least trying.

  6. So tired of Newsweek phrasing headlines like this. “To be” suggests likely bill passage. It’s what you’d say in advance of yet another defense spending increase because Congress can’t wait to break $1T. It’s not what you say about something that doesn’t even have unanimous support on the one side fighting for it.

Now watch it pass and ICE just morphs into a literal secret police with absolutely zero oversight and nothing else meaningful is done about it.

  8. I really wish this would come to a vote but t would love to know all the democrats who would vote against it.

  9. They’ve gotta go. The department image is stained. Everyone knows them as the gestapo. We have all seen the large number of terribly trained jack booted thugs they have hired. We’ve seen the lists. We’ve seen all the Proud Boys they have hired, including the leader.

Abolish the department and leave it at that. Any future efforts should be FAR more heavily regulated and not attempted under this administration.

  10. Even if it passes, they’ll just hand-wave a new department into existence like they did for the government efficiency department. The ICE troops on the ground will not feel any difference.

No way it passes, certainly not with a veto-proof majority. Unless democrats do this when it actually has a chance, it’s just performative

  12. It won’t come close to passing, but hopefully it will piss off a lot of Republicans, especially Trump.

  13. Need to ban ICE goons from transferring to other agencies, needs to lock down funds so trump can’t keep misappropriating them.

  14. couldn’t come soon enough… American citizens have suffered enough under their terrorist activities

I keep getting ads for the DNC fight fund. Personally I will never vote for another democrat until they promise to prosecute the current administration to the fullest extent of the law.

  16. Abolishment wouldn’t be enough. I want charges for every single agent. I don’t really care if you signed checks or shuffled papers you get a 100% fuck you for even participating in this. There isn’t enough money in the world to get me to sacrifice my morality.

  17. bleh-apathetic on

This won’t pass, but it’s a decent effort. Dems need to continuously put to the floor very specific, minute bills about ICE. “ICE cannot shoot innocent people”. Let Republicans vote against it. “ICE cannot harass citizens”. Let Republicans vote against it. “ICE cannot knee someone in the face” let Republicans vote against it.

    Etc etc.

  18. Government agencies are not allowed to advocate for against any future legislation that would affect their funding.

  19. It must be abolished. It had become trump’s personal army of loyalists, funded by your tax dollars. There is no reforming it.

the entirety of the dhs needs to be disbanded at this point. we really need to reexamine everything passed in the post 9/11 climate in general.

  21. It’s a step. I fear the heads will just be transplanted to a different agency and do the same damn shit, but it’ll still do something

  22. reckless_responsibly on

Can we just get rid of DHS entirely? We did just fine with the constituent agencies being in other departments.
