(From the article) “On her first day as Governor, Abigail Spanberger made a decisive move: she vetoed Executive Order 47, ending Virginia’s participation in the federal 287(g) program that allowed local law enforcement to act as ICE agents.”

What was always strange about this is that local law enforcement never had any responsibility in this role until Republicans recently started getting raging hard-ons for immigrants.
Republicans were always fine with illegal immigrants. They provided an underclass to businesses that work jobs Americans didn’t want to do, at rates they didn’t want to do them, and effectively had no rights. The recent fetishism with deporting all of them is an odd contrast.
But, of course, the huge deportation army is also an army that can be used for other things …

Wait, she began today? I thought she’d start on January 20th, but Congratulations Virginia.

>from the article but emphasis mine:
>The decision carries particular weight given that Latino voters were a decisive force in Spanberger’s election, with **the largest shifts from the 2024 presidential election occurring in Virginia’s most heavily Hispanic communities**—particularly Prince William County, home to thousands of Salvadoran and Central American families.
it’s too bad so many groups voted against their own interests or stayed home in 2024 but at least they are starting to rectify that. hopefully it’s not too late.

And a bill to abolish ICE shows up elsewhere? Time to reform ICE under a different name to get around any bans?
