Malta can no longer play a double game and must choose between unity with European partners or subservience to a US president, Momentum said on Sunday.

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump escalated his quest to acquire Greenland, threatening multiple European nations with tariffs of up to 25 per cent until his purchase of the Danish territory is achieved.

Reacting, European leaders warned against threats, with the bloc noting that tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral.

On Sunday, Momentum said Europe could not and should not capitulate to such coercive tactics. The evident aim is to fragment European unity and establish a new global order based not on law, but on the principle that ‘might is right’.

“This is not the conduct of an ally. Trump has proven he is no longer a reliable partner for Europe. Consequently, Europe must stand firm in defence of its core values of Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité.”

The political party’s leader Arnold Cassola said this was a defining moment for Malta.

“The time for ambiguity is over. [Prime Minister] Robert Abela and [Foreign Affairs Minister] Ian Borg must now decide: will they choose unity with our European partners, or subservience to a US President employing blackmail?”

“The PN must also break its silence and clearly declare its position. [Leader] Alex Borg must clarify his stance: Does he still regard Donald Trump as his political role model, as he stated recently?”

For Momentum, the choice was clear: unity with European partners was Malta’s only viable path forward.

Our future and security lie within the European family that harbours the values of peace, solidarity, and democracy, the party added.
