The President of Croatia Zoran Milanović has issued a statement addressing the current political and military tensions surrounding Greenland, underlining that decisions about the territory’s future belong exclusively to the Greenlandic people.

“Given the current political and even military claims regarding Greenland, an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, I emphasise that only the people of Greenland may decide on Greenland and its future, in accordance with the right to self-determination granted to them by the laws of the Kingdom of Denmark.

There is no security reason that can stand above this right of the people of Greenland. I am convinced that all security-related concerns raised in recent times can and must be resolved through dialogue and cooperation between Denmark and Greenland with the United States, as well as within the framework of the North Atlantic Alliance, of which both states are equal members.

Security issues are in no way linked to Greenland’s status under international law. This is also evidenced by the situation during the Cold War, when the United States successfully protected its national interests and ensured its own security and that of NATO as a whole by stationing its forces in Greenland in agreement with the Danish authorities.

Only such a model, that is, an agreement between Denmark and the United States, with full respect for the will of the people of Greenland, constitutes an acceptable solution to this situation,” the president’s statement read.

The Croatian government on Sunday issued its first official response to US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose trade tariffs on European allies over Greenland, calling for a united and coordinated European position and reaffirming support for Denmark’s sovereignty.
