Vera leaped from fifth place to become the most popular name for baby girls in Sweden in 2025, while Noah was the most popular boy’s name for the third year running, according to new statistics from the Swedish Tax Agency.
A total of 605 newborn girls were named Vera in 2025, according to the agency, which is in charge of the national population register.
Alma, the most popular girls’ name in 2024, tumbled down to sixth place while Astrid leaped to second place from eighth last year, with 523 newborns given the name. Olivia held onto its position as the third most popular girls’ name.
Among boys, Noah was the clear winner for the third year in a row, given to 640 boys. It was followed by Hugo, Liam, Nils and Alfred. William, the most popular name of all back in 2022, has now fallen to eighth place.
Vera, meaning “faith” in Slavic languages and “true” in Latin, has long been a popular name in Sweden. The earliest records of a Noah in Sweden, meanwhile, date back to 1592 (spelled as “Noe”). The popularity of Noah has peaked since the start of the current millennium.
