Unknown vandals sprayed a hate slogan and swastikas on the gate of the community synagogue in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, prompting deep shock among local Jewish residents. The Plovdiv police have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify the suspects.
“This crosses a red line and is an attempt to instill fear in Jewish life in the city,” said a member of the Jewish community in Bulgaria’s second‑largest city.
“This appalling event will not deter us,” Rabbi Mendy Mendelson, the Chabad emissary in Plovdiv, added. “In the face of hate we will continue to bring light and act with Jewish pride. Plovdiv is a tolerant and safe city — this is an isolated act and we are in constant coordination with the police. We are also preparing to inaugurate a new Chabad center and will continue our mission with even greater resolve.”
