  1. Its pretty clear Carney is trying to wrangle the Europeans into forming a third rail against BRICS and the US.

The remaining west will get eaten alive if we split but still have economic and burgeoning military power together.

  2. ex-surreal_killer on

I hope Mr Carney has the best security detail and that every precaution is taken to ensure his protection as he flies around the world making deals and giving speeches that are 100% bound to piss off the US, because I don’t trust them to just let him become the leader of the middle powers of the world, which I totally think he is capable of.

  3. Carney called it like it is. Time for us to stop pretending and letting the customer dictate the terms. They (US) have the population. We have what they need. And collectively have if we all work together. Time to collectively make a stand against the playground bully.

  4. One of the, if not THE best speech about the current state of affairs.
Saying like it is, without insulting anyone.

  5. That speech will live on for a very long time. We have the right PM. Maybe the most qualified person to steer the ship through the storm ahead.

  6. WinterDustDevil on

He told (diplomaticly) t.rump and the excited states of america to Fuck Off, we don’t need or care about you.

My Man with his elbows up.

  7. Proud to have Carney represent Canada.

    > So, Canada. Canada has what the world wants. We are an energy superpower. We hold vast reserves of critical minerals. We have the most educated population in the world. Our pension funds are amongst the world’s largest and most sophisticated investors. In other words, we have capital talent. We also have a government with immense fiscal capacity to act decisively. And we have the values to which many others aspire.

    > Canada is a pluralistic society that works. Our public square is loud, diverse and free. Canadians remain committed to sustainability. We are a stable and reliable partner in a world that is anything but, a partner that builds and values relationships for the long term.

    > And we have something else: we have a recognition of what’s happening and determination to act accordingly. We understand that this rupture calls for more than adaptation. It calls for honesty about the world as it is.

    > The powerful have their power. But we have something too: the capacity to stop pretending, to name realities, to build our strength at home, and to act together.

    > That is Canada’s path. We choose it openly and confidently, and it is a path wide open to any country willing to take it with us.

Great speech and all. Too bad it’s over most American’s heads….

    “Hegemony”…..”asymmetrically”….

    Fuhgeddaboudit!

I’m conservative, but I gave the liberals a shot in the recent election. Glad I did, and so far I’m impressed how Mr. Carney is navigating the mess created by the gangster down south.

And that speech was a great listen.

  10. Real leadership. Mark Carney a true world leader and the best Prime Minister Canada could have in these difficult times.

  11. Amazing speech.

I doubt the Americans will be able to craft a narrative to poke holes in this speech so they’ll just suppress its coverage.

  12. Centre-right Canadian guy here, traditionally conservative. We have the right guy running this country. I can’t tell you the last time I was this proud of our Prime Minister’s words and actions.

  13. corduroy_pillows on

Some Conservatives I know are saying he made a clown of himself and the country on the world stage.

    We live in different realities.

  14. He’s decent but needs to be pushed much more progressive. Much better with environment, labour, housing, taxing the morbidly rich etc.

  15. It is a balm to listen to someone who can actually form a proper sentence.

It is going to get messy, real messy, but I have some hope it can be weathered.

  16. Thank you to all those fellow Canadians who value education, self-improvement and who uphold progressive values. Collectively we made this happen – we voted for a leader that only happens once in a lifetime, that is unlike all the toxic insanity happening south of us and within the zealot maple extremist versions of that right here at home.

We chose a respectable, super competent leader who is not only working to improve Canada in this new direction we are forced to head in, he is widely praised on the world stage. Today is a proud day for Canada.

Word on the street is he wrote his own speech.

  17. sailing_by_the_lee on

That was a great speech. It had all the important points:

    1. We have to live in reality, not just hope that Trump will die soon and then things will go back to normal. They won’t. This isn’t a transition, but a rupture.

    2. Hegrmons like the USA can use threats, raw military and economic power, and transactionalism successfully for a short period, but it has diminishing returns over time.

    3. We middle powers are vulnerable right now because we trusted the Americans and the rules and institutions they lead after WW2, which were mutually beneficial. But the USA has now decided to use that trust and economic integration as a weapon. Thus, middle powers must combine together to make new rules, agreements, and institutions that reduce our vulnerability to hostile hegemonic actors.

Although he didn’t say it outright, Carney also pretty strongly implied that the middle powers will have to play the US and China off of one another until we can be less reliant on them. The USA and China won’t have a Cold War-style clash of ideologies, but rather they’ll be competing for international markets, and we can benefit from that if we play our cards right.

  18. “This bargain no longer works”

Unless you’re China, apparently. Make no mistake, the pivot is entirely directed by the jingoism that got him elected. He’s going to call another election very soon and is trying to keep the US as the focus over the complete and utter failure of the LPC for the past decade.

The entire speech was reminiscent of Trudeau era posturing about being an idealist, only he’s now shrinking the coalition from the UN to Europe, and trade from the US to China. Also said he’s not a globalist 8 months after saying he was, same with China going from our “largest security threat” to a “strategic partnership”. Talks about respecting sovereignty in Greenland and Venezuela, while also quietly affirming the “One China” policy.

Stirring the pot and saying whatever to get elected while they flood subs and social media with praise for Carney. People really don’t look past the headline or comment section anymore.

Absolutely amazing statesmanship. Such a contrast from listening to Trump whine about Joe Biden or  Poilievre about Trudeau.

  20. theothersock82 on

Even you consertqtives have to admit: Pierre Poillievre would never be able to deliver a speech like that on the world stage. He’s not right for the job.

  21. Anotherspelunker on

This is how it sounds when a level-headed adult is in the room. Whether you agree or disagree with Carney’s stance in some policies, it is undeniable that this is the kind of rational mindset this world sorely needs right now

  22. Man. How did we get a guy this dialed in? No one can argue that Carney is not a generational intellect. It’s possible people don’t agree with his politics but I think it’s hard to argue that anyone would be a better PM. Impaired to trump and some of the European leaders it’s night and day.

  23. LeGrandLucifer on

I just read the whole thing. It’s wishful thinking. He’s not wrong about the reality of the world. He’s wrong about the solutions he proposes. He gave the example of the grocer and his sign. You know what happens to the grocer who doesn’t put his sign in the window? He gets a visit from some men who take him away and nobody ever sees him again. And now he’s saying Canada is just the first country to “take the sign out of the window.” Well Canada is going to get a visit from some men and disappear.

Unarmed resistance is impotent in the face of armed oppression.

  24. captsmokeywork on

I don’t agree with the liberals on everything, but Thank Ozzy he’s our prime minister.
